Iskunauha on tekniikka, jossa lankalenkkejä viedään toistensa sisään ja ohi ja näin muodostaa eräänlaista palmikoitua nauhaa. Suomenkielinen nimitys tulee siitä, että ainakin kun on tehty jotain lenkeillä, viedään kädet lenkkeineen kauas toisistaan eli isketään nauha tiiviiksi.

Fingerloop braiding is a technique were loops (or “bows”) of yarn are taken inside and beside each other and this forms a braided ribbon. The English term “fingerloop braiding” is fairly self-evident as there are loops and they are held in fingers. You can learn some of these braids on my Beginner’s Fingerloop Braiding course.

Noudatan suomenkielisessä selostuksessa Viivi Merisalon terminologiaa, jossa lankalenkkiä kutsutaan termillä pohjukka.

Here are a few samples of bands based on Renaissance instructions. The names refer to Silkewerk.com, the names vary a bit in the original manusripts.

A Broad Lace

Tämä 5 pohjukan nauha on yksi helpoimmista. Se on litteä ja keskellä on kaksilankainen ristikko.

This 5 loop braid is one of the easiest. It is flat and in the middle there’s a double cross.

Seuraava nauha on tehty samalla ohjeella, mutta tämä väritys ei ole historiallisista ohjeista. Halusin selvittää yksittäisen pohjukan reitin, joten otin neljä valkoista ja yhden vihreän pohjukan. Toisin kuin tavallisessa palmikossa, oikea ja nurja puoli ovat aivan eri näköiset.

The following band is made with the same instruction, but this coloring is not from the historical patterns. I wanted to know how a single loop travels in the band, so I took four white and one green loop. In a regular plait front and back are similar, but that doesn’t apply to a fingerlooped braid.

A Lace Common Round, A Lace Baston

Nämä viiden pohjukan nyörit palmikoidaan saman ohjeen mukaan, mutta Baston-mallissa on kaksiväriset pohjukat, jolloin siitä tulee raidallinen.

These five-loop braids are made with the same instructions, but Lace Baston has two-colored (“departed”) loops, so it becomes striped.

Cheyne Brede

Cheyne Brede on 8 pohjukan nyöri. Se näyttää vähän kierretyltä nyöriltä, mutta yhdessä kohtaa kuvio muodostaakin V-muodon (ks. punavalkoinen nyöri).

Cheyne Brede is an 8-loop cord. It looks a bit like a twined cord, but at one spot the pattern forms a V shape (see the red and white cord).

Greyne dorge

“Ohranjyvänauha” on yksi suosikeistani ja opetan sitä usein peruskurssilla. Se on suhteellisen helppo tehdä ja kolmivärisenä siinä on paljon variaation mahdollisuuksia.

“Greyne dorge” or “Barley corn” is one of my favorites and I often teach it in the basic lessons. It is fairly simple and the three colors allow for a lot of variation.

Minulla on ohranjyvänauhasta variaatio, jossa toinen keskustan muodostavista lenkeistä vaihdetaan reunan väriin. Oppilaideni mielestä tuloksena on sydänkuvioinen nauha.

I have a variation of the barley corn band where one of the middle colors is changed to edge color. My students often say that the resulting band has a heart pattern in the middle.

Cheueron brod

Nuolikuvioinen nauha tehdään kahdeksalla pohjukalla, neljä kumpaakin väriä. Nauha ei oikeastaan ole vaikea, mutta vaatii vähän sorminäppäryyttä.

The chevron braid for one braider is made with eight loops, four of each color. The braid isn’t really difficult otherwise, but requires somewhat nimble fingers.

Lankakokeiluja / Experimenting with yarn

Näytteeni on palmikoitu sileästä puuvilla- tai silkkilangasta, mutta muutakin voi kokeilla, kunhan lanka on riittävän vedonkestävää. Hapsulanka on 100% polyesteriä ja siinä on pari ydinlankaa, joihin hapsut on pujotettu, joten se toimii yllättävän hyvin. Ylhäällä kahdeksan pohjukan nyöri, keskellä kaksi erilaista viiden pohjukan nyöriä ja alimpana neljän pohjukan nyöri.

My samples this far has been braided with smooth yarn, either cotton or silk, but you can try other materials as long as the yarn can tolerate the pulling. The eyelash yarn I used is 100% polyester and has a few straight core strands in between which the “lashes” have been parked and it works surprisingly well. On the top an eight loop braid, in the middle two different five loop braids and on the bottom a four loop braid.
