Yleisimmin nyörihaarukat tehdään puusta ja minunkin kokoelmassani valtaosa haarukoista on puuta. Olen jakanut ne muodon mukaan varrettomiin ja varrellisiin. On makuasia, kummasta pitää enemmän, kaikilla niillä saa nyörin aikaiseksi.

Usually lucets are made of wood and that’s the prevalent material in my collection, too. I’ve split them up into handleless and handled lucets. Your preference is a matter of taste, all of them can be used to create a cord.

Varrettomat – No handle

“Lyyra” on perinteinen kahvattoman nyörihaarukan muoto. Tämä yksilö on hyvin viimeistelty ja istuu käteen.

The “lyre” is a traditional shape for a handleless lucet. This exhibit is well finished and fits nicely in my hand.

Tämän nyörihaarukan on tehnyt Chestnut Tree Creation, joka ei näytä enää olevan Etsyssä. En olisi uskonut, että valitan tästä ikinä, mutta tässä on nyörihaarukka, joka on liian leveä käteeni. Sitä pidellessäni sormissa tuntuu koko ajan venytystä eikä se käänny hyvin.

This lucet was made by Chestnut Tree Creation that doesn’t seem to be on Etsy any more. Unusually, my complaint with this lucet is that it is too wide to fit my hand. When I hold it, my fingers are stretched all the time and the lucet doesn’t turn well.

Tämän pieni haarukka on hyvän muotoinen ja hyvin viimeistelty, mutta ehkä vähän kapea. Se on tehnyt PinkeyCraftAndMore, joka näyttää siirtyneen kokonaan tilaustöihin. Aina voi tietenkin kysyä…

This small lucet is well shaped and nicely finished, but maybe a bit narrow. It has been made by PinkeyCraftAndMore, that seems to have moved into made-to-order. Of course one can always enquire…

Tämä haarukka on hyvin samanlainen kuin edellinen, vain lakkaamaton. Se on tehnyt Woodnwotnots, joka näyttää olevan tällä hetkellä tauolla.

This lucet is very similar to the previous one, except that it is unvarnished. It’s been made by Woodnwotnots, that seems to be taking a break.

Tällä nyörihaarukkalla on vähän venytetty perä, se ei oikein vielä ole kunnon kahva, mutta tarjoaa kuitenkin enemmän tarttumapintaa ja tämä haarukka istuu käteen huomattavan hyvin. Tämä on ostettu Tukholman käsityömessuilta Korpsilta, valitettavasti he eivät näytä myyvän Suomeen.

This lucet has a bit stretched bottom, not really quite a handle, but it offers more to grab and feels unusually good in my hand. This one is bought at Stockholm craft fair from Korps (unfortunately their webshop only seems to work in Sweden).

Tässä haarukassa on tekijän puumerkki, mutta valitettavasti en yhtään muista, kenen tekemä se on. Luultavasti se on kuitenkin suomalainen. Haarukka on ollut minulla pitkään ja se on ihanan sileä ja juuri oikean kokoinen. Se on suosikkini varrettomista nyörihaarukoistani.

This lucet has a maker’s mark, but unfortunately I have no clue who made it. I think it is Finnish, though. I’ve had this lucet for a long time and it is perfectly smooth and just the right size for me. It is my favorite among the handleless lucets.

Mitähän tästä sanoisi… En ole edes avannut pakkausta, koska tiedän, että en tule käyttämään tätä haarukkaa ja haluan pitää ohjeen (alla) ja nostotikun (oikealla) tallessa. Tämä haarukka on kaunis, mutta se on liian ohut ja liian pyöreä minun käteeni ja piikkien kärkiväli on aika pieni. Kyllä tälläkin varmasti nyöri syntyy, mutta minulta vain hitaasti. Hmmm, what to say… I haven’t opened the package, because I know that I won’t really use this lucet and I want to keep the instructions (underneath) and pick (on the right) safe. This lucet is beautiful, but it is too thin and too round to fit my hand and the space between the horns is small. I’m sure one can get a cord done on this one, but for my part it’ll be slow. However, if you think this would be just your style, you can buy this lucet e.g. from The Tree House (and it’s cheap). Note that only one side of the lucet is painted.

Viimeisimpänä nyörihaarukka, joka on vähän niin kuin puolivarrellinen. Se on Ziggy lucet, nyörihaarukka, jonka muotoiluun on oikeasti panostettu. Last of these is a lucet that is kind of half-handled. It is a Ziggy lucet with a well thought-out design. With straight horns, comfy width and some handle to hold it fits my style perfectly. This listing is ordered roughtly by size. Because the photos are same size, I added a ruler that may help to figure out the size. And yes, those are centimeters. If you find them hard, 5 cm is roughly 2 inches. Thus the lucet here right below is slightly under 6 inches long.

Tämä on ensimmäinen nyörihaarukkani. Tai oikeastaan niitä oli kaksi, mutta toinen on ollut jo vuosia kateissa. Käytin tätä nostotikun kanssa (taisi olla iso neula), mutta aika nopeasti kyllästyin ja ostin netistä isomman. Tässä on pituus kohdallaan, mutta piikit ovat kovin lyhyet ja lähellä toisiaan, niin menee turhaksi pipertämiseksi.

This is my first lucet. Or actually there were two of them, but the other one has been lost for years. I used this one with a pick (a big needle, I think), but I soon got tired of fiddling and bought a bigger lucet online. The length is fine, but the horns are short and close to each other and that wasn’t my cup of tea.

This is the old Basic lucet by Scottish Fibres. It suits small nimble fingers, but it is fairly angular. The company doesn’t exist any more, because the owners got retired. They made these lucets themselves out of local birch.

This is the newer Basic Lucet by Scottish Fibres. It is rounder and feels better in the hand. It is still small, but easier to use. I have a few of these for sale, contact me if interested.

Kuvien haarukat ovat eri paikoista, vaikka ne ovat hyvin samannäköisiä ja -kokoisia. Tumma on käteeni liian paksu, molemmissa on alaspäin levenevät piikit, joista en oikein pidä. Luulen, että molemmat ovat Etsystä, mutta en muista, keneltä.

The lucets in these photoso are from different sources even though they look the same and are the same size. The dark one is too thick to fit my hand comfortably, and both have horns that widen towards the bottom, which I don’t like. I think both are from Etsy, but I couldn’t figure out who made them.

Tässä on toinen setti kaksosia eri lähteistä. Ylempi on saksalainen (luultavasti Amazon.de:stä), alemmasta en tiedä. Piikkien välissä on niin vähän tilaa, että en haluaisi käyttää kumpaakaan. Alempi on vähän mukavampi käytössä, sillä siinä on pyöristetyt kulmat.

Here’s a second set of twins from different sources. The top one is German (probably from Amazon.de), I don’t know about the bottom one. There’s so little space between the horns that I wouldn’t like to use either of these. The bottom one is slightly more comfortable to use as it has rounded edges.

Olen 99 % varma, että nämä molemmat ovat Sistermaiden tuotantoa, alakuvan haarukka on aavistuksen yläkuvaa isompi. I am 99 % sure these both are made by Sistermaide. I think the bottom one is slightly larger. I’m not fond of the horns with top bumps, but in general Sistermaide lucets are quite passable.

Alice A on suomalainen yritys, joka tekee mm. nyörihaarukoita ja nyörilevyjä ilmeisesti laserleikkauksella. Alice A:n haarukoita voi ostaa messuilta ja esimerkiksi Lankavalta. Mallia on kyllä ajateltu, mutta se ei sovi minun käteeni kovin hyvin. Riippuu tekniikastakin, haittaavatko pallot piikkien kärjissä.

Alice A is a Finnish company that makes among others lucets and cording discs, probably with laser cutting. You can buy these lucets at fairs and for example from Lankava. I know the makers put effort into design, but I don’t terribly like this model. It is also matter of technique if like the horns with a bump.

Tässä on kokoelmani kallein ja kaunein nyörihaarukka. Se on virolaisen Gunnar Karron käsialaa, mutta nyt näitä ei näytä olevan hänen Etsy-kaupassaan (vaarallinen paikka erityisesti nauhankutojalle). Tilauksesta voi ehkä saada, mutta se maksaa sitten oikeaa rahaa. Mutta haarukka on kuin taideteos ja silkinsileäksi viimeistelty. This is the most expensive and most beautiful lucet in my collecction. It is made by Estonian Gunnar Karro, but on the moment he doesn’t seem to sell them in his Etsy shop (a dangerous place for weavers of narrow wares). You might get one made to order, but it will cost a big chunk of change. But the lucet is like a work of art and finished to silky smoothness. It is unfortunately slightly too small for me, but I might not really have the heart to use it anyway because it’s so exquisite.

Tämä nyörihaarukka on hyvin ohut ja aika leveä, joten se painaa kämmentä kädessä pidettäessä. En myöskään ole aivan varma siitä, kuinka hyvin se kestää käytössä käpristymättä. This lucet is very thin and fairly wide, so it presses into my palm when I hold it. I’m also not convinced of its durability. According to my notes it was sold by mimisneedlebasket on Etsy, but they don’t seem to carry lucets any more.

Tämä haarukka olisi hyvä ystävä jollekulle pienikätisemmälle. Minulle se on vähän liiankin siro, mutta muoto miellyttää silmää eikä siinä ole teräviä reunoja. Tekijästä ei ole havaintoa…

This lucet would be a good friend to someone with smaller hands. For me it is a bit too dainty, but the shape is appealing and it has no sharp edges. I have no clue about who made it…

Tämä hieman eksoottisen muotoinen nyörihaarukka on Wooden Gifts Boutiquelta Etsystä. Heillä on muunkin muotoisia nyörihaarukoita, mm. “lyyra”, mutta tämä piti saada muodon takia. Haarukka osoittautui yllättävän hyväksi kädessä, voisin ihan hyvin käyttää tätä.

This slightly exoticly shaped lucet is from Wooden Gifts Boutique on Etsy. They sell other shapes, too, among others a “lyre”, but I had to get this one because of the shape. The lucet turned out to fit my hand pretty well, I could use this one for real.

Yli 15 cm pitkät – Over 15 cm long

Tämä kapeahko haarukka on mahonkia. Piikkien muotoilu on hyvä, mutta kärkiväli saisi olla isompi. GoodShepFarmin pitäisi palata bisnekseen syksyllä 2020, heillä ehkä on vieläkin näitä valikoimissa.

This narrowish lucet is made of mahogany. The horn shape is good, but the space between could be bigger. GoodShepFarm should be back in business in fall 2020, they might still be making these.

Tässäkin haarukassa voisi olla kapeammat piikit ja enemmän tilaa piikkien välissä, mutta pituus on aika hyvä. “Vyötärö” on ehkä vähän tarpeeton, varsi voisi olla suora. En ole koskaan keksinyt, mihin tarvitaan varren päässä olevaa reikää, mutta eipä siitä ole haittaakaan.

Also this lucet could have narrower horns and more space between the horns, but the length is pretty good. “Waist” is maybe not needed, the handle could be straight. I’ve never figured out what the lower hole is for, but on the other hand it doesn’t bother me while using the lucet.

Nämä nyörihaarukat on tehnyt Scottish Fibres. Ensin oli olemassa vain isompi malli Superior Lucet, mutta sitten tehtiin myös taskuun paremmin mahtuva Compact Superior. Superior Lucet on oma suosikkihaarukkani ja minulla on niitä useampi, jotta voin helposti vaihtaa projektista toiseen. Firmaa ei ole enää olemassa eläköitymisen johdosta, mutta minulla on vielä muutama myynnissä nyörihaarukkakaupassa.

These lucets were made by Scottish Fibres. First there was only the bigger Superior Lucet, but then they also made the smaller Compact Superior that fits better in a pocket. Superior Lucet is my favorite lucet and I own several so I can easily switch between projects. The company doesn’t exist any more as the owners retired, but I have a few of these for sale.

Tämä saattaa olla uusi suosikkihaarukkani. Siitä saattaa tulla esityshaarukkani, sillä se muistuttaa kovasti Suomen kansallismuseossa ja Enköpingin museossa olevia nyörihaarukoita. Haarukka on juuri sopivan kokoinen ja istuu käteeni mukavasti. Varsi on sorvattu pyöreäksi ja koko haarukassa on käsityön leima. Se on tehnyt Åke Erlandsson Vävkompanietille.

This may be my new favorite lucet. It may become my demo lucet because it looks a lot like lucets in museums, like this one at The National Museum of Finland and this one at Enköpings museum in Sweden. The lucet is just the right side for my hand. The handle has been turned into a round shape and the whole lucet feels handmade. It has been made by Åke Erlandsson for Vävkompaniet in Sweden.

This lucet was bought just for the collection. It has sharp angles both at the base of the horns and in the middle of the handle and both press into my hand when I do basic cord. The outward turning horns aren’t helping, either. I don’t even remember where I bought it…

Tämä on Alice A:n isompi malli nykyisessä asussaan. Parannusta edelliseen on aika paljon, mm. hiomalla pyöristetyt reunat ja paremmat piikit. Tämä on jo vähän liian leveä minun käteeni, mutta toimii. Suomalaisesta koivusta tehdyn nyörihaarukan voi ostaa Lankavalta.

This is the new big lucet by Alice A. It is a much improved model, among others the edges have been rounded and the horns are nicely designed. This one is a bit wide for me, but works. The lucet is made of Finnish birch and you can buy it from Lankava (they do ship abroad).

Tekstiilialan isommatkin tekijät tekevät nyörihaarukoita. Tämä on Prymin käsitys aiheesta. Tiesin jo ostaessani, että se on luultavasti liian iso ja niinhän siinä kävikin, että se on vähän liian kolho minun käteeni. Ostin haarukkani Hobbiilta Tanskasta, kun oli muutakin tilattavaa, sitä saanee Suomestakin.

The bigger actors in the field are making lucets, too. This is Prym’s take on the subject. I knew already when I ordered the lucet that it would probably be too big and that turned out to be true. I bought mine from Hobbii in Denmark as I had other things to order, but you might be able to find a source closer to home by searching for “Prym lucet” or “Prym knitting fork”.

Myös lankavalmistajana paremmin ehkä tunnettu hollantilainen Scheepjes on tehnyt oman versionsa nyörihaarukasta. Luulen, että kauniit koristeet on laserleikattu. En ole löytänyt näitä Suomesta myynnistä, omani tilasin Wool Warehouselta Englannista. Haarukka on ehkä vähän leveä omaan käteeni, sen kääntäminen on vähän työlästä.

A Dutch company I know better as yarn manufacturer, Scheepjes, has made a version of the lucet. I think the beautiful decoration is laser cut. I got mine from Wool Warehouse in the UK. I find this lucet a bit wide for my hand, turning it takes a bit of effort.

Tämä ruusupuinen nyörihaarukka on valmistettu Intiassa, mutta ostettu Etsystä yhdysvaltalaiselta firmalta Fashoknit. Haarukka on aavistuksen kapeampi kuin Scheepjesin malli ja istuu hyvin käteeni, mutta piikit ovat ehkä turhan lähellä toisiaan siinä kohtaa, mihin nyörini yleensä asettuu. Haarukka on sileä ja reunat on pyöristetty, joten sen puoleen se on hyvä käyttää.

This rosewood lucet is made in India, but bought from an American company on Etsy, Fashoknit. The lucet is a smidgeon narrower than the Scheepjes one and sits well in my hand, but the horns are a bit too close together at the height where my loops usually settle. The lucet is smooth and the edges have been rounded, so that way it is nice to use.

Tämän haarukan olen ostanut vuosia sitten Hämeen keskiaikafestivaaleilla virolaiselta kauppiaalta. Se on jo pikkuisen iso minun makuuni, mutta tätä on kyllä oikeasti käytetty. Koristelu tekee tästä haarukasta poikkeuksellisen.

This lucet I’ve bought years ago at Häme medieval festival from an Estonian trader. The lucet is a bit big for me, but I have used it for real and it was ok. The decoration makes this lucet stand out.

Tämäkin haarukka taitaa olla markkinaostos, mutta en muista, mistä. Leveyden ja paksuuden suhde tekee siitä minulle ison ja piikit ovat todella terävät, mikä ei sovi yhtään suosikkitekniikalleni. Paksuutensa vuoksi haarukka on myös aika painava.

Also this lucet is probably from a market, but I can’t recall where. The ratio between width and thickness makes it too large for me and the horns are also very sharp, which doesn’t fit my favorite technique at all. Because it is thick, this lucet is also fairly heavy.

Kuvasta ehkä jo huomaa, että tämäkin on Sistermaiden tuote. Tämä on “Giant Lucet”, jättiläisnyörihaarukka. Kokoa voi olla vähän vaikea hahmottaa kuvasta, mutta haarukka on siis pidempi kuin A4-arkki on leveä ja muut osat sitten sen mukaan. Tämän haarukan hankin opetustarkoitukseen, ajattelin ostaa matonkudetta langaksi ja tehdä tällä sitten nyöriä matonkuteesta.

The picture may already give off that this is a Sistermaide product. It is their “Giant Lucet”. It maybe difficult to size it in the pic, but it is longer than a standard paper (A4/letter) is wide and all the other parts are in proportion to that. I bought this lucet for teaching purposes, I thought I’ll by carpet weft for yarn and then make lucet cord with that on this lucet.
