Tavallisimmin nyörihaarukat tehdään puusta, mutta perinteisiin materiaaleihin kuuluu myös luu. Kekseliäät ihmiset ovat kokeilleet kaikenlaisia muitakin materiaaleja, esimerkiksi 3D-tulostettu muovinen nyörihaarukka näyttää olevan kuuminta huutoa Etsyssä.

Most commonly lucets are made of wood, but bone is another traditional material. Inventive people have tried also other kinds of materials, for example 3D printed plastic lucet seems to be on the rise in Etsy.

Luiset haarukat näyttävät aika samanlaisilta luultavasti siksi, että käytetyt luut ovat olleet samanlaisia. Luulen, että ylimmän ostin kauan sitten Hopealuulta markkinoilla, kahden alemman ostopaikkaa en muista. Kaikki ovat pieniä, liukkaita ja painavia eivätkä siksi oikein minun mieleeni. Alimmaisen piikit ovat myös niin terävät, että ensin pitäisi näyttää vähän hiomapaperia sille. Alemmassa reiässä oleva nyöri on merkki omistuksestani; puisiin haarukoihin poltan merkkini, mutta näihin en henno tehdä mitään pysyvää, niin muuten tarpeeton reikä saa palvella merkkinä.

The bone lucets look similar probably because the bones used have been similar. I think that the top one was bought from Hopealuu at some market, I don’t remember where I found the two others. They are all small, slippery and relatively heavy and thus not my cup of tea. The horns of the bottom one are so sharp that they need a bit of sandpaper if I ever plan to use it. The piece of string in the lower hole is my mark; I burn a mark on my wooden lucets, but can’t bring myself to do the same to these, so the otherwise idle bottom hole gets to serve as mark.

Tämä luinen nyörihaarukka tuli Ranskasta, ostin sen Etsystä latelierheidreikriltä. Haarukan malli on muita lähempänä Sigtunan haarukoita, mutta takana oleva uloke on ylimääräinen ja myös estää haarukan käytön normitekniikallani. Tällä haarukalla pitää tehdä nyöriä haarukkaa kääntämättä ja minulle se on niin pieni, että käytin nostotikkua apuna.

This bone lucet came from France, I bought it from latelierheidreikr on Etsy. It is closer to the Sigtuna lucets than my other bone lucets, but the part at the back is superfluous and stops me from luceting with my normal technique. With this lucet one must do no-turn luceting and the lucet is so small, that I used a pick for the loops.

Here’s another round bone lucet, this time made of elk bone. The maker is Estonian Koordikamber and it came with a yarn bobbin and a started cord. This lucet is easy to hold in the hand and I managed to make cord without a pick, there’s enough space between the horns to fit the fingers there.

Sain vihdoin kokoelmaani sarvesta tehdyn nyörihaarukan. Se tuli Espanjasta, ostin sen Etsy-kauppiaalta NorthernTrader. Haarukka on leveämpi ja kevyempi kuin luiset nyörihaarukkani ja koko on aika hyvä käteeni. Se on viimeistelty hyvin sileäksi ja reunat on pyöristetty.

I finally managed to get a lucet made out of horn. It came from Spain, I bought it on Etsy from NorthernTrader. The lucet is wider and lighter than my bone lucets and the size fits my hand pretty well. The lucet has very smooth finish and the edges are rounded.

I bought this 3D printed lucet on Etsy and got custom text on the handle. It has the address of my homepage, “lucet.fi”. There are a few slightly coarser places in the edges, but overall the result is good. The maker doesn’t do them any more, but if you search Etsy with “3D lucet”, you get other options and lots of color choices.

Hankin toisen 3D-tulostetun nyörihaarukan, tällä kertaa lyyran muotoisen. Tekijä on Snyder Spindles, jolla on aika hyvä värivalikoima. Valitsin pinkin, koska halusin jotain hyvin erottuvaa. Haarukka on hyvin viimeistelty, siinä ei ole teräviä kohtia ja kaikki reunat on tulostettu pyöristettyinä.

I got a second 3D printed lucet, this time one shaped like a lyre. The maker is Snyder Spindles. There are quite a few colors to choose from, I chose pink because I wanted something that stands out. The lucet is nicely finished, it has no sharp spots and the edges are all printed well rounded.

Tämä 3D-tuloste tuli Italiasta, sen myi Etsyssä threedp. Tämän nyörihaarukan pinta on röpelöinen ja osa reunoista on vähän teräviä, joten se ei pyöri kädessä yhtä hyvin kuin monet muut haarukoistani. Se on myös 13 mm paksu eli paksumpi kuin suosikkihaarukkani. Haarukkaa saa monenvärisenä.

This 3D printed lucet is from Italy, it was sold to me on Etsy by threedp. The surface of this lucet is a bit coarse and some of the edges are sharp, so it doesn’t turn in my hand as well as many of my other lucets. This one is also 13 mm (~1/2 inch) thick, thicker than my favorite lucets. You can get this one in multiple different colors.

Tämä on Arabesque Braidsin muovinen nyörihaarukka. Oletan, että se on puristettu muotissa ja väri on ehkä valittu matkimaan luuta. Haarukka on vähän ohut, mutta sen reunat on pyöristetty niin hyvin, että ne eivät juurikaan paina. Ohuudestaan huolimatta aika tukevan oloinen ainakin testikäytössä.

This is a plastic lucet by Arabesque Braids. I assume it is molded and the color probably imitates bone. The lucet is a bit thin, but the edges are so well rounded that they don’t dig badly in the palm. Despite the thinness seems sturdy at least in test use.

Muovinen, kilpikonnan luuta imitoiva, Ziggy lucet lankapuolineen on nyörihaarukoiden aatelia. Juuri oikean levyinen, hyvät piikit, riittävästi vartta, sopivan liukas. Löytyy myös puisena, molemmat saa Ziggy Rytkan verkkokaupasta. Myös stopparina toimivat lankapuolat pitää ostaa erikseen (paitsi jos ostaa paketin, jossa ne ovat mukana).

The Ziggy lucet, here in tortoise-shell imitation plastic, is the pinnacle of lucets. Just the right width, good horns, enough handle, nicely slippery. Also available in wood, both can be gotten from Ziggy Rytka’s webshop. The bobbins that also work as stoppers have to be bought separately (unless you buy a kit).

Sitten vähän oudompaa: keraaminen nyörihaarukka. Kaunis, mutta kamalan kallis ja aivan liian painava. Muoto on sinänsä ihan hyvä eikä haarukkanyörissä haittaa, että haarukka ei ole aivan symmetrinen, mutta paino on vähän ongelma. Tämä jää kokoelman koristeeksi. Oman voi ostaa keramiikkataiteilijalta Etsystä.

Then something a bit different: a ceramic lucet. Beautiful, but very costly and far too heavy. The shape isn’t bad and in luceting it doesn’t even matter that the lucet isn’t quite symmetrical, but the weight is a bit of a problem. This lucet will serve only as decoration. You can get your own from ceramic artist on etsy.

Kun tilasin Etsystä tämän nyörihaarukan (ja sen oranssin kaverin, joka on hukassa), luulin kuvan perusteella saavani jännästi maalatun puisen haarukan. Olin aika hämmästynyt, kun paketissa olikin polymeerisavesta (Fimo tms.) tehtyjä nyörihaarukoita. Haarukka on vähän taipuisa ja hieman heppoisen oloinen, joten en ole koskaan käytännössä testannut sitä pidempään. Se sen sijaan kävi selväksi, että se pehmenee auringossa eikä siksi sovellu ulkokäyttöön. Jos itse tekisin nyörihaarukan Fimosta, ottaisin malliksi jonkun pienemmissä puisista haarukoistani ja tekisin pyöreät muodot. Tämä litteä ei vakuuta.

When I ordered this lucet (and its orange mate that is now missing) on Etsy, I thought based on the photo that I’d get intricately painted wooden lucets. I was quite surprised when the lucets in the package were made of polymer clay (Fimo etc.). The lucet is a bit bendy and feels flimsy, so I’ve never really used it for a longer time. I found out however that it gets soft in the sun and thus doesn’t fit for outdoor use. If I were to make a lucet out of Fimo, I’d use one of my smaller wooden lucets as a pattern and I’d make round forms. This flat one isn’t very convincing.
